GOVINO – Assembling the Perfect Spread for a Spring Soiree in Napa

Assembling the Perfect Spread for a Spring Soiree in Napa

Assembling the Perfect Spread for a Spring Soiree in Napa

While Napa County boasts some of best fine dining California has to offer, the whitetablecloth experience is only half of what makes Napa a culinary mecca. At its roots, Napa is an agricultural community that turns out some of best produce, meats, cheeses, and other fresh ingredients around. So in order to get the true taste of the region, here is the guide to our favorite local purveyors so you can assemble the perfect spread for a spring soiree in Napa.

Marshall’s Farm Honey:

Open Wednesday through Sunday, the old-school farm stand at Big Ranch Farms is reminiscent of a simpler time when the roadside produce stand was your one-stop shop for everything fresh, natural, and delicious. Big Ranch Farms maintains a licensed nursery as well, meaning the farm stand carries all the fresh fruits and vegetables you need for your meal, plus the centerpiece for the table.

Napa Valley Oil Manufacturing Company:

Since 1931, Napa Valley Olive Oil has been the go-to destination for locally grown and manufactured olive oil in St. Helena. Inside the quaint farmhouse location, you’ll find a traditional Italian market carrying vast selection of infused olive oils and balsamic vinegars, as well as other local and imported delicacies.

Oxbow Public Market:

With over 40,000 square feet of local vendors and artisan cafes, the Oxbow Public Market is a foodie’s paradise. Time permitting, you could easily spend an entire afternoon here hopping from one gourmet food stall to another while enjoying the scenic views of the Napa River. It was hard for us to narrow it down, but here are three of our favorite vendors within the Oxbow Public Market:

The Fatted Calf Charcuterie:

Using only pasture-raised meats, The Fatted Calf is a charcuterie and butcher shop on a mission to bring you the best possible artisan meat products. Whether you’re looking for pâtés, salumi, sausages, terrines, guanciale, or pancetta, you’re guaranteed find it here and you can bet it’s made in house.

Oxbow Cheese & Wine Merchant:

The sister store of Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant located in San Francisco’s historic Ferry Building, the Oxbow Cheese & Wine Merchant features a boutique assortment of wines from across the Napa Valley. The world-class wine offerings are perfectly complimented by a variety of artisanal cheeses, hand selected by their expert cheesemongers.

Fieldwork Brewing Company:

A recent addition to the Oxbow Public Market, Fieldwork Brewing is making waves in the craft beer world. Founded in Berkeley in 2015, Fieldwork taprooms are quickly popping up across the Bay Area and beyond. At the Napa location you can expect ten or more rotating beers on tap at all times, plus fresh beer for take-away in Crowler cans — the perfect mate for a GOVINO pint glass for your on-the-go craft beer consumption.

GOVINO - Throwing the Perfect Spring Picnic in Napa

The perfect spring picnic in napa

Throwing the Perfect Spring Picnic in Napa

Nothing quite captures the Napa lifestyle like celebrating the arrival of spring with a gourmet picnic, complete with a bottle (or two!) of local vino, all while soaking in the beautiful vineyard landscape. Here is a list of the Napa destinations that we think have the most scenic and wellappointed outdoor picnic areas. Keep in mind, some of the following locations don’t allow you to bring in outside food, but trust us, you’re probably better off enjoying the local victuals any way.

V. Sattui:

The V. Sattui Winery has over two acres of picturesque picnic grounds that are shaded by old-growth oaks and overlook their wildfloweradorned vineyards. Better yet, Sattui has an artisan deli complete with house-made charcuterie and over 200 different cheeses, along with sandwiches, salads, and anything else you may need to complete the gourmet Napa picnic experience.

Nichelini Winery:

Dating back to 1844, the Nichelini Winery is the oldest family-owned winery in Napa Valley, making it a local historical fixture. Feel free to bing your own picnic spread, but a purchase of a bottle or a tasting flight is required to use the Nichelini picnic grounds, and it is well worth it. Situated below the winery and its cellars, the Nichelini picnic area is complete with bocce ball and is in view of the original 1886 homestead cabin — the last remaining homestead cabin in Napa County.

Napa Cellars:

Located in the heart of Napa and surrounded in all directions by the coastal mountains, the rolling grassy lawns at Napa Cellars are another ideal locale for spring picnic. Although no outside wine is permitted, feel free to bring you own picnic lunch, roll out your blanket, fill up your GOVINO glasses, and sit back to enjoy the view.

Rutherford Hill:

Situated high above the valley floor, the Rutherford Hill Winery boasts some of the best panoramic views in Napa. Tables in the Oak Grove picnic area are only available by reservation, so plan ahead. There is a $75 fee per table, but the fee is waived for wine club members or through a comparable wine purchase. Feel free to bring your own picnic fare to accompany some of the best wines and most breathtaking views Napa has to offer.

Addendum:

If you’re like us, you’re huge fans of Thomas Keller and are probably dying to score a reservation at his world-renown French Laundry. But if it’s completely booked months in advance (as it always is), consider trying Addendum. True to its name, Addendum is a self-described “footnote” to Ad Hoc, Keller’s casual dining venue in Yountville. Addendum is a no-frills food window serving elevated American comfort food classics boxed up and and ready to take on the go. For $17.50, guests have their choice of fried chicken, bbq pork ribs, or a pulled pork sandwich accompanied by two house-made sides — a small price to pay to be able to say your picnic was catered by Thomas Keller.

GOVINO Potted Chocolate Pudding

Perfect for all the Spring holidays, these Potted Pudding desserts are sure to be the talk of your party.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Salt
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped (1 cup)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure mint extract
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 10 Oreo Cookies (or chocolate wafer cookies)
  • Garnish: mint sprigs and gummy worms

Directions:

Whisk the sugar, cornstarch, cocoa and 1/8 teaspoon salt together in a medium saucepan. In a measuring cup, combine cream, milk and vanilla.

Pour 1 cup cream mixture into sugar mixture and whisk until cornstarch is dissolved. Add remaining cream mixture and whisk until smooth. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly, and cook until thick, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to low and add the chocolate. Whisk until the chocolate melts, usually takes about a minute.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and add mint extract and butter and whisk until butter melts. Quickly divide pudding, whisking as you work to prevent sides from setting up, among four (12 ounce) GOVINO Cocktail Glasses, leaving 1/2" of space at the top.

Refrigerate until cool.

Once cool, pulse cookies in a food processor until they are finely ground (and look like dirt). Top each with 2 Tablespoons of ground-cookie, and garnish with a mint sprig and gummy worm.

GOVINO Valentine’s Day Bubbles Bar

February 13, 2018

GOVINO Valentine’s Day Bubbles Bar

At GOVINO, we love the idea of a serve-yourself cocktail bar — it’s a win-win for both the guests and you, the host. Giving your guests the option to craft their own cocktail lends your get-together a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and it ensures that the host is able to socialize as opposed to being tied to the kitchen mixing drinks. With Valentine’s Day coming up, we think a Bubbles Bar is the perfect interactive beverage option for your V-Day party. The idea behind our Bubbles Bar is to take the standard Champagne cocktail, the mimosa, and elevate it with a selection of fresh pressed juices and fresh fruit garnishes, allowing your guests to have fun and get creative with their cocktails. The best part? Everything can be assembled and set up ahead of time making hosting a breeze.

The Supplies:

  • 28oz GOVINO decanters with lids
  • 14oz GOVINO whiskey glasses
  • 8oz GOVINO Champagne flutes
  • Schramsberg Sparkling Wine
  • Veuve Clicquot Champagne
  • Orange Mango Santa Cruz Organic Juice
  • Strawberry Lemonade Santa Cruz Organic Juice
  • Pomegranate Santa Cruz Organic Agua Fresca
  • Raspberries, pomegranate seeds, blueberries

The Assembly:

The 28oz GOVINO decanters are a stylish way to serve the juices, making it easy to tell which juice is which, and bringing a natural pop of color to the Bubbles Bar. For the garnishes, we actually think the 14oz GOVINO whiskey glasses make for a sleek and unique serving vessel. As for the bubbly, you can expect to make 6 or 7 cocktails per each 750ml bottle of sparkling wine. So assuming each guest has two to three drinks, you should plan on buying about 3 to 4 bottles of Champagne for every 10 guests you have. We recommend a one-to-one ratio of wine to juice, but it’s ultimately up to your guests’ individual tastes. Serve in 8oz GOVINO Champagne flutes, and don’t forget to garnish with the fresh fruit (or fruits) of your choice!nbsp;

OktoberfestOktoberfest

October 2, 2017

Hosting a Sophisticated Oktoberfest Celebration

Oktoberfest in Munich and its satellite celebrations around the globe have become associated with over-indulgence, but the world’s largest food and drink festival has a rich heritage and many great traditions to inspire your own autumnal celebration. Oktoberfest originated as the public wedding party for the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in 1810, and has since expanded into a vast festival of German food and agriculture, music, dancing, horse racing, and eventually beer. Here is some inspiration to host your own Oktoberfest celebration that is slightly more sophisticated than the average:

The Food:

Oktoberfest has its roots in the celebration of farmers and agriculture, so we recommend serving local sausage, preferably bratwurst. Pair with sauerkraut, grainy mustard, and find a local bakery with fresh soft pretzel bread.

The Drinks:

Beer is of course the most recognized symbol of Oktoberfest, and the style of choice is Märzen. It is a malty lager and was originally brewed in the month of March and cellared until fall. But here are some other options to round out your beverage menu:

Radler

The radler is a refreshing lesser known staple of Oktoberfest that combines equal parts beer and sparkling lemonade.

Wine

With all the buzz about beer, many people don’t realize that wine too plays a big role in the Oktoberfest celebrations. One of the largest and most popular tents at the Munich festival is dedicated to serving wine. Our wine recommendation is Riesling, as its sweetness, acidity, and intensity are a great compliment to a hearty autumn meal.

Of course, in the spirit of Oktoberfest, enjoy your food and drinks outside in the fresh air, but feel free to swap the oversize stein for a more elegant GOVINO glass.

Boho Dinner Party

September 27, 2017

Inspiration:Inspiration: Bohemian Al Fresco Dinner Party;

Soaring summer temperatures are fading into fall, and what better way to celebrate than by throwing the perfect backyard dinner party? There’s just something about the combination of sun, sky, the smell of food on the grill, and cold beverages that makes you feel at home and among friends. But with back to school in full swing and life slowly getting back to boring, it’s hard to find the time and energy to host a memorable social gathering. So we’re here to offer up a few tips on just what you need to throw a last-minute bohemian soiree fit for a magazine spread.

First off, pick your color palette. Keep things bright and beautiful for a boho chic look – think blues, oranges, pinks, and greens. Look for fresh flowers at a nearby farmer’s market to keep things local, and hit a flea market for some vintage vases and other funky, eclectic table decorations.

Composing a stylish yet casual outdoor dining space is easier than you think: Simply gather some bright fabric or tapestries, lay them on the floor, and plop down some throw pillows for your guests to sit on. Set aside some chairs and brightly colored throws to create a cozy nook giving your guests the space for more intimate conversation. String some hanging lights and lanterns above your dining area, and accent the space with tea lights to set the mood. Finally, take your flowers and get creative – mix and match bright floral arrangements with kitschy vintage vases for a chic pop of color!

Most importantly, you need a fresh, flavorful food and beverage menu to complement the bright and airy ambiance. For food, think light, casual, and refreshing — Mediterranean staples like pita bread with hummus and tabouleh, Greek salad, and dolmas are a great fit. However, the heart of the party is of course the drink selection, and nothing ties together the bright and stylish boho vibe than the GOVINO jewel-tone glasses. The new sapphire, aquamarine, topaz and ruby tinted GOVINOs are luminous under twinkling garden lights and have the color palette ideal for a fashionable al fresco get-together. Drink-wise, you should have a variety of international libations (think Mai Tais and Mojitos), and plenty of wine to offer. Keep those glasses full and the conversation flowing, and you’ll have an easy breezy backyard hang that’s sure to satisfy your friends and family.

GOVINO SUMMER FUN RECAP

September 19, 2017

Chock-full of local food, art, culture, and of course some of the finest wines, craft beers, and cocktails around, our summer event line-up here at GOVINO has been absolutely action-packed and fun-filled. As this season draws to a close, though, we are still looking back fondly on all the great times we shared. So in remembrance of summer 2017, here is a quick look at our favorite events in which we were fortunate enough to participate.

GOVINO at 2017 Bottlerock Napa ValleyGOVINO Stomp2017 Colorado Brewer's FestivalPacific Coast Wine & Food Festival GOVINO

BottleRock Napa Valley

We are so proud that GOVINO is again the official glass of the BottleRock music and food festival. We can’t think of a better way to kick off the summer months than to listen to music and celebrate in Napa Valley with Northern California’s best wine, beer, and local cuisine.

Harvest STOMP

Organized by the Napa Valley Grapegrowers, Harvest STOMP is one of the most highly anticipated harvest celebrations of the year. The event featured over 120 of Napa’s most exclusive wines along with live music and local cuisine. Most importantly, however, proceeds from Harvest STOMP support the region’s world-renown vineyards.

Colorado Brewers’ Festival

Colorado has long been at the forefront of the American craft beer movement, and nowhere was this more evident than in Fort Collins at the 28th Annual CO Brewers’ Festival. We so enjoyed the opportunity to try beer from over 40 of Colorado’s best breweries, especially out of the bespoke GOVINO pint glass.

Pacific Wine & Food Classic

Fine wine, world-class cuisine, and the fresh ocean breeze… Nothing sums up the California experience quite like the Pacific Wine & Food Classic. We are again honored to join such celebrated chefs, winemakers, sommeliers, and food personalities at this unforgettable epicurean experience.

Froze by GOVINOFrozé

September 5, 2017

Recipe:Don’t Miss Out on this Summer’s Coolest Cocktail Trend, the Frozé

This summer is quickly coming to a close, but there is still time to beat the the heat with the season’s coolest wine cocktail. The frozé, a portmanteau of the words ‘frozen’ and ‘rosé,’ is the adult slushy that has taken the beverage world by storm. Coined last spring by Kelly Fields, the pastry chef behind celebrated New Orleans restaurant Willa Jean, the frozé is a fun and clever way to beat the Southern heat, and has quickly become a summertime staple across the country.

Rosé on its own is already a hot-weather favorite. It owes its seasonal popularity from the fact that rosés generally utilize some of the color and tannins from the grape skin, but not so much that it could qualify as a red wine. This makes for a wine that is interestingly complex yet amazingly refreshing, and it becomes even more refreshing when frozen into a slushy. Frankly, however, freezing any wine will mask some its unique flavor characteristics, so we recommend you save the expensive Provençal rosé for a nice meal, and rather opt for a rosé in the $10 to $15 range to become the base of your frozé.

Ingredients:

1 standard (750 ml) bottle of mid-range rosé

½ cup simple syrup

Optional: Dash of Campari or Aperol (Campari and Aperol are both bitter Italian apéritifs that add an herbal complexity to the cocktail)

Lemon for garnish

Process:

To achieve the best texture, we think it is ideal to make the frozé using the the same tried and true method used to make Italian granita:

Friendsgiving

November 11, 2016

Friendsgiving is a recent trend that has grown as big as our bellies do on Thanksgiving. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, let us help shed some light on the newly popular craze. Friendsgiving is pretty simple when you think about it – it’s an early Thanksgiving-themed meal/party shared with friends! It’s the best of both worlds if you ask us!

Good food, good friends, lots of laughs, and lifetime memories. Sounds pretty amazing, right? We bet you’re now thinking about hosting your own this year, aren’t you? Since we may have swayed your decision, let us help! We know how stressful planning a party can be and it doesn’t have to be!

Here are 5 simple steps to help ease your party-planning:

1. Host your party Friday – Sunday

            • We found that trying to host a gathering on a weeknight is tough! Avoid last-minute scrambling, late nights, and awful work days by hosting your dinner on a “non-school night.”

2. Meal prep the week of your event

    • This is important! We often forget how long it takes to make a full meal for more than we’re used to. We suggest starting a few dishes a couple days before the big day.

3. Make it pot-luck style

  • Assign dishes & desserts to each one of your guest… that’s less stress on you!

4. Don’t forget the beverages

  • Be sure to have plenty of options for each person at your party. Make sure there’s plenty of bottles of wine, beer, and plenty of options for different cocktails. Also, be sure that your cocktails are up to par… If you need to try them all week to ensure they’re good enough to serve, we surely won’t judge!

5. Serve your beverages in a GOVINO… we mean it!

  • Imagine all the people, all the moving parts, and all the beverages that will be consumed… Now, imagine if fragile stemware was in the mix… That’s a disaster waiting to happen! Using shatterproof GOVINO drinkware is one less thing you have to worry about! You can also plan to send your guests home with their GOVINO as a keepsake – they get a reusable gift and you get fewer dishes… Now that’s a win-win!

Friendsgiving sounds simpler than you thought, huh? We’re glad to be of service and we promise, you won’t be disappointed inviting us to your next dinner party!

'HOLIDAY HASSLE'

October 11, 2016

It seems as though each year goes by a little quicker… We’re over here still planning what we’re going to bring to the 2014 Memorial Day potluck…

Just kidding, but in all seriousness, the holiday season can be a little overwhelming and difficult to find the perfect gift for everybody on your list. It’s only October, but the holiday parties and gift exchanges will be here before we know it, and with that, so will the stress of finding the gift that everyone will enjoy. Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place.

In our opinion, GOVINO is the greatest gift you can give, and we’re not just saying that. Think about it, you have a list full of people you have to buy for, right? From wine lovers and cocktail enthusiast, to those friends of yours making brew in their garage... And we have them all covered.

For your vino-loving friends, we suggest pairing our 16oz. wine glasses with a bottle of their favorite red or white (But, to keep that friend for life, we suggest proving them with both... Trust us!). And what about your brew-concocting pals? Well, our 16oz beer glasses make for the perfect pint. We recommend picking up a 6-pack from your local liquor store and gifting it with a GOVINO 4-pack. And just like that, you all will be drinking to an unforgettable night. Oh and let us not forget about our bubble-loving friends! We all have those, don’t we? Well our 8oz flutes are made especially for the fizz. Tie a big bright red bow around the neck of the sparkling wine and your bubbly-adoring companion will be celebrating the moment they open their gift.

Maybe it’s not gift ideas that you’re looking for… Perhaps you’re looking for inspiration to host the perfect holiday party, well we certainly have ways to help make your festive get-together less stressful.

We know, planning a themed gathering can be a difficult and demanding experience. You want to make sure everything is perfect and in-order, from the beverages to the decorations… Nothing can go wrong. Well, that’s where GOVINO comes in. We take the stress out of any party. Our shatterproof, reusable, BPA & BPS free, recyclable drinkware leaves you worry-free all night. We can’t guarantee someone won’t drop their drink, but we can promise that if they do, you don’t have the burden of picking up the broken pieces.

And better yet, our entire line is offered in a dishwasher safe version. Once the guests have left, place your drinkware in the top-rack of your dishwasher and you’re free to focus on the other details.

Maybe you’re in charge of hosting your company’s holiday celebration and are looking for a keepsake that your colleagues can take home with them. Why not make it even more memorable with customized GOVINOs? Have your company’s logo, a fun saying, or the date of your event printed on each glass and send your workmates home with this reusable gift.

That’s something we can all cheers to.

THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX IS HERE AND SO IS THE SEASONAL BEER

September 22, 2016

‘Tis the season for cooler weather and everything pumpkin flavored.

Today, September 22nd, 2016, marks the first day of fall and with it comes the cool breeze, crisper air, and the leaves begin to turn colors of reds, yellows, and orange. As things get a bit frostier, we come up with our best ways to stay snug and the obvious way we know how to warm up is drinking; whether you’re huddled around the fire, drinking before a trip to the pumpkin patch, or gathered around the grill while tailgating before the big game. There are endless of outdoor activities to continue to have, even into “sweater weather” season.

As the sky gets darker, it seems as though the beer does too. So, let’s put away the shorts, tanks, and the pale ales and bust out the long-sleeves and the hoppier brews. We’ve done our research and have found the top flavors you could expect this autumn: coffee, maple, caramel, vanilla, pecan, hazelnut, toffee, and of course, pumpkin.

We’re huge fans of seasonal brew, but we’re bigger fans of taking our beer along with us during our autumnal activities. Of course, it’s easy to carry cans and bottles around, but you’re left drinking from, well, the cans and bottles. When doing so, you’re cheating yourself from the full experience of drinking craft beers. The taste of your canned or bottled brew is significantly different from the taste of the cold beverage poured into a glass, because your senses are cut off from the beer’s flavor, color, and aromatics. Not the mention, there’s also that risk in bringing your glass pint with you while camping. We sure wouldn’t want our goblet of fragrant molasses, sweet pumpkin, and unique spices to shatter around a late-night campfire, ruining our evening. And that’s where we come in... Our 16oz. beer glass is the perfect pint for any fall night. Our glasses are light weight enough to take with you anywhere and better yet, they're shatterproof.

So, here’s to the first day of autumn, may the season bring you satisfying beverages and less broken glass!

GOVINO'S GUIDE TO OKTOBERFEST

GO ANYWHERE, GOVINO

September 16, 2016

GOVINO, the drinkware that allows you to literally go anywhere.

For those of you who have not heard of our products, or don’t fully understand what it is, GOVINO was originally created as a trade tool to help professional salespeople showcase their wines whenever and wherever proper stemware wasn’t accessible. Upon its debut in 2008, GOVINO's very first customers included some of the world's most renowned and respected wine producers, making GOVINO the first unbreakable wine glass of its kind to be accepted by the wine industry!

All our products are perfect for any indoor and outdoor gatherings. They make picnicking easy, pool-sipping more fun, they’re light enough to pack and take camping, and beach-goers love them!

Imagine bringing real stemware to the beach or around the fire pit! That could be a disaster, but these “glasses” are made from a BPA-free flexible polymer, which properly showcases all types of wines, beers, and spirits, so you get the sophistication of crystal without the risk of broken glass. GOVINO products are completely made in the USA and recyclable – but better yet – they are totally reusable.

GOVINO currently has five styles to choose from to complete your event: 16oz wine glass, 12oz. wine/cocktail glass, 8oz. flute, and a 16oz. beer glass.

The ultimate 'go anywhere™' drinkware – shatterproof, reusable and recyclable.
